We’ve just begun calving a small group of newly purchased American Aberdeen cows. We are very thankful for the “barn cams” that I installed last fall. When a cow is getting close to calving, I put her in a calving pen in the barn. Once she is there, we can watch her on any mobile device. It has saved us from having to wake up every few hours, put on boots and walk out to the barn. I am able to open the app, prop up my phone up on my nightstand and look in on the cow whenever I want. They also record video so that we can look back at and know that a calf has nursed and received it’s very important colostrum. Janan used to spend hours in a lawn chair next to the calving pen just to be assured that the calves would get their colostrum. We normally won’t calve in the spring as it’s already so hectic around here but these cows were already bred when we purchased them. It shouldn’t be problem this spring as monitoring them is so easy now!
